Face Your Fears
'Face Your Fears' is a series of artworks created by Cinder Blackwater (AKA CinderBellaArtworks) in 2019. The series displays a series of fears and demonstrates the very real ways that these fears can manifest themselves, as well as what happens when someone's biggest fear becomes a reality. The series begins with the first stages of fear: when the victim is first noticing the fear but it has yet to cause a major impact on their life, then it develops into a showcase on the different ways fears impact people both emotionally and physically, before ending with what can be the final stages of fear: the fear consuming the victim until their death. Artist's Statement: "My work is about how fears can overcome you despite the fact that these fears may seem irrelevant to others. The goal of this series is to portray the realities of fear by displaying various fears and demonstrating the many ways fear can manifest itself, both emotionally and physically. I also wanted to show what can happen when someone’s biggest fear comes true. I was inspired to make this series because I live with agoraphobia (the debilitating fear of change and/or going outside of one's 'comfort zone'; this condition is most well-known for causing people to never leave their homes or, in extreme cases, a certain piece of furniture) which has forced me to see first hand how many people do not realize the debilitating effects of fear to some and how fear can consume its victim from within. For many victims, fear is constantly by their side and most who do not suffer from it do not recognize the devastating effects of fear and how something so small can completely consume someone's life. I wanted to be a voice for those of us who suffer everyday at the hands of fear and to show the world how debilitating fear can be, by showing what it is like to be plagued by a fear of everyday objects. I wanted to show what is feels like to be harmed everyday by something no one can truly see or control." - Cinder Blackwater on 5/13/2019 These artworks were made using liquid latex over hand-sculpted clay faces. The latex was then colored with standard makeup, alcohol activated body paints, cream body paints, water activated body paints, and mica powders. The hair and eyebrows were made from hair extensions that were glued into place using spirit gum, a cosmetic adhesive. The eyes were molded using a low heat plastic meant for 3-D printing that was heated in boiling water and then pressed between two spoons to create the shape of the eye and then painted using acrylic paints. The works also contain many different mediums to demonstrate the objects of the fears including: glass, scrap metal, broken knife blades, and reindeer moss. |
